Jethro and the Kitchen Academy were a perfect match for the first ever Children's Food Festival. Our aims were to inspire children to cook healthy food and make them curious about food from other cultures - and this is just what Kitchen Academy does. Less of the fairy cakes and more of the hummous and sushi. Less of the 5 a day, and more of the losing count because you start to love fruit and veg so much! Jethro Carr started cooking when he was seven back at his family’s farm in Devon. Since 2002 he has been running Kitchen Academy which provides cookery demonstrations and workshops for both children and families on a nationwide basis. Kitchen Academy’s innovative approach has been very successful and Jethro and his team have worked with some of the country’s best known organisations including Fair Trade, The Soil Association, The WOMAD Foundation, Fareshare and many leading food festivals.
Jethro grew up in a large family having nine brothers and sisters. When he was not out helping on the farm he was helping in the vegetable patch as well as in the kitchen. When he was just fifteen he set to work at a local country house hotel where he started on his road to being a chef. Five years later he was off to Brighton University to study Environmental Sciences. Throughout his time as a student and after graduating in 2002 he worked for some of the county’s top hotels and restaurants, including the Grand Hotel Brighton, The Thistle Hotel Brighton and Plumpton Racecourse.
Jethro recognised the fact that children were not getting a fair deal and were losing their connection with food before this became part of public debate. Having the skills as a chef, a love of family life and a keen interest and knowledge of trends within today’s environment, Jethro had found his vocation. He founded Kitchen Academy initially with support and business guidance from the Prince’s Trust. The Trust provided the mentoring and expertise needed to help him establish a successful business.
He works in schools, at re-habilitation centres for Fareshare and at numerous Food Festivals and Events. With a rural up-bringing and having studied environmental issues, he often brings his specialist knowledge to the Kitchen Academy workshops, be it promoting Fairtrade produce, locally grown or free range produce. His style is informal, imaginative and professional.
Since starting Kitchen Academy Jethro has continued developing his chef skills and has worked for a number of event catering companies during winter periods when Kitchen Academy is less in demand. Jethro has worked with Red Snapper, London’s preferred caterers who cater for some of London’s amazing venues including the Natural History Museum, Whitehall’s Historic Banqueting House, Old Billingsgate, Forbes House, The Tate and the Round House. He has also worked at other venues including Brans Hatch for McLaren and The East Sussex County Golf Club.
